What Comes Around Goes Around….that is the philosphy of giving back behind Arlene’s Levee Ride.
Following an accident, Fort Lauderdale Firefighter Arlene Cohen endured 14 surgeries in three years on an injured ankle before facing a difficult decision: Save her foot with limited mobility and be forced to leave her job with Fort Lauderdale Fire and Rescue or have her leg amputated below the knee. Arlene elected amputation in September 2009. With the assistance of the Challenge Athletes Foundation and the Fort Lauderdale Firefighters Benevolent Sick and Injured Fund, she returned to regular duty on Aug. 18, 2010. On November 20, 2010, the first levee ride was held as a way for Arlene to “give back” to the charities that helped her.
On January 21, 2012, the Second Arlene’s Levee Ride will once again be led by Arlene Cohen, and will be in honor of injured Hollywood Fire Fighter, Derek Avilez.
In 2010, Derek Avilez, 32, was left a quadriplegic following a skimboarding accident in the waters off Hollywood Beach. The former professional soccer player fell and broke his neck. It was his fellow firefighters who came to his aid. Now Avilez said he is “on his way back.” One year after his accident, he took his first steps on the beach and he also walked at a recent commission meeting to accept a recognition for his five years of service to the City of Hollywood.
In November 2011, he walked about 450 feet with a walker — something doctors never thought he would do. In addition to an outpouring of prayers for Derek, his fellow fire fighters have donated time and money through the Hollywood Fire Fighters Benevolent. This year, his fellow brothers and sisters from his department and the Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue Department will host the Second Arlene’s Levee Ride to raise additional funds to aid Derek, his wife of 10 years and their 3 beautiful children, while Derek continues his quest to return to full duty as one of Hollywood’s bravest.
